Meaning of freedom in 2020
In most of the western world nearly everyone has freedom, but what does it mean to be free in 2020? Freedom is a privilege we sometimes forget that in other countries that people are locked up for who they are and what they believe.
Freedom is a cornerstone of our country and western world is based on the ability to make choices, ranging from what they say, choose to do and look for. This uncensored world is a privilege, not a right as in many countries, freedom of speech is surprised.
It is important that we protect our freedom, as when we debate and discuss topics in society. The freedom in its self to debate allows us to develop ideas and express what we feel, we live in a democracy based on law and order. Our first duty as citizens is to stop any government from restricting our rights to freedom.
But, the problem is the balance between our right to privacy versus the duty of the government to protect us. The problem with the internet its impossible to regulate or close down sites, as once a thing is published online it is out there forever. The recent scandal at Facebook wasn’t really a surprise, as studying IT and Business you realise that on these free sites which you sign up to you are the product.
The way protests and movements grow now is through is social media, as this allows them to control the narrative whereas the news media has to report objectively and weigh up both sides of the debates. But we have seen whether it be the
The key thing with these protests they have mainly happened in western countries where the right of protest is part of the law. Whereas we saw with the Arab Spring, how movements can fail and end up in civil war. The thing protest do work? That is only something we cannot understand yet.
We also have the freedom to believe what we want, while we are a society based on Christian values we are not forced to believe, and other faiths aren’t suppressed. We have the choice to follow or not, be Muslim, Sikh, Jewish or Budish.
These religious freedoms enrich all of our life’s, through their cultures and traditions. We all celebrate Christmas and Easter in this country, we are not all Christians, but we have the freedom not to. I believe that there are things we can learn from every religion, and those things shape our values.
Freedom to be ourselves means that we have choices to better ourselves, however, a lot of this sadly isn’t possible because of where you live, your education, social background. But we all shrive to do better than our parents, our choice is to do better.
To me, freedom is to be able to love and marry the man I love, when I find him. Being to live with minimal support in my own home, do what I want to do. But, because of my cerebral palsy finding money and suitable employment hard.
I am however grateful that I live in a society where we all have the same opportunities if we work hard and meet the right people. My freedom isn’t restricted by my disability, beliefs or sexual orientation, but we never must believe the battle is won, because there will always be groups and individuals who will want to take away these freedoms
Freedom is a privilege as so many countries don’t have this freedom, Reporters Without Borders says that the worst region for freedom of speech is the Middle East and Eastern Asia. This is a right, I believe nothing should be allowed to be exempt from criticism.
But, blasphemy is an offence in some countries which can result in the death penalty, this is dangerous as I believe the interpterion of blasphemy is down to an induvial. We need to work towards a world, where everyone is free to believe and be who they are.
We need a society based on accepting different ideas, as that represents freedom itself. A society where we can take bits of different cultures to create a hybrid, where we celebrate our differences, that also means standing together when minority communities and groups are attacked.
Freedom is something we all need to protect, regardless of our political and personal views, as it allows us to campaign and fight for what we believe in.
We have a duty to stand up for our freedoms in this country, they will try to take away some freedoms under the ‘national security’ banner. The internet yes does need some monitoring, but to monitor everyone is taking away freedoms and that right needs to be defended.
We need freedom so everyone has the same rights, it’s the ability to be who you are. If one person is losing long-held rights, we all are, the freedom we have in this country is important.
If you lose an election, that means you have to concede that your ideas didn’t win, but it doesn’t mean you have to change your ideas. You need to find a better way of convincing people with your freedom that you are the better option.
Freedom is built into our brains; we all have the natural want to say and act how we want. You can control what people are allowed to say and do, but you will never be able to control what people think. They may know what they can and can’t say, but that ability to think is one they cannot take away.
Being free is important as it gives us a choice. But, with the increased threat of terrorism and violence does that also mean that we need to think about balancing the job of the state to protect us against the individual’s right to privacy?
